Tuscany, Italy, 1998
Photograph by Bob Krist
Between vineyards and ricotta farms, a field of bright red poppies dazzles those lucky enough to drive along the undulating hills of Tuscany. According to author Frances Mayes, Tuscany is "the sweetest countryside I know, where inviting roads wind off into fields punctuated by abandoned stone houses."

(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "With Frances Mayes in Tuscany," May/June 1999, National Geographic Traveler magazine)

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, 1996
Photograph by Michael Melford
A small boathouse in a field of flowers reminds one of the song by Patti Page:

"If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air,
Quaint little villages here and there;
You're sure to fall in love with Old Cape Cod."

(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "The Cape," May/June 1997, National Geographic Traveler magazine)

Micronesia, Date Unknown
Photograph by David S. Boyer
A mushroom shaped island rises from the crystal clear waters of Micronesia. Formerly called the Trust Territory, Micronesia possesses only two-thirds the land area of Rhode Island, yet lies scattered over an expanse of ocean comparable to the contiguous United States.

(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Micronesia: The Americanization of Eden," May 1967, National Geographic magazine)

Ténéré Desert, Niger, 1997
Photograph by George Steinmetz
"Stark circle of rock measuring about 60 feet [18 meters] in diameter lies in the Ténéré desert below the massif of Adrar Madet in Niger. Roughly a mile away in each of the four cardinal directions, similarly crafted arrows point away from the circle, whose origin, purpose, and age remain a puzzle."

(Text and photograph from "Journey to the Heart of the Sahara," March 1999, National Geographic magazine)

Nauset Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, 1961 == HA HA, I WAS HERE
Photograph by Dean Conger
A blimp passes over the pristine sands of Nauset Beach on Massachusetts's Cape Cod. A popular vacation spot jutting 35 miles (56 kilometers) into the North Atlantic, Cape Cod is "only an accident of land in the domain of the sea."

(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Cape Cod: Where Sea Holds Sway Over Man and Land," August 1962, National Geographic magazine)

Near Hohenschwangau, Bavaria, Germany, 1971
Photograph by George F. Mobley
"Commanding a view of the bluish-green Alpsee and girdled by dark forests, King Ludwig's fairy-tale marble castle Neuschwanstein rises from a lofty rock west of Hohenschwangau."

(Text and photograph from the National Geographic book The Alps, 1973)

Arequipa, Peru, date unknown
Photograph by Bates Littlehales
Arequipa, the city at the foot of El Misti, is the commercial and agricultural hub of southern Peru. The city takes its gleam from volcanic building stone.

(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "The Five Worlds of Peru," February 1964, National Geographic magazine)

Denmark, 1997
Photograph by Sisse Brimberg
A field of mustard in bloom announces the arrival of the long-awaited summer. With skies aglow till 11 p.m., sun-loving Danes revel in the extra daylight with garden parties, picnics, and the fiery Midsummer Eve celebration.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Civilized Denmark," July 1998, National Geographic magazine)

Kyushu, Japan, 1974
Photograph by Luis Marden
A small cloud of smoke rises from a volcano on Kyushu, Japan. Part of the volatile Ring of Fire, Japan is a nation of islands—two thirds of which are covered with mountains, most of those volcanic.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Bamboo, the Giant Grass," October 1980, National Geographic magazine)
