Help on Diminished 7th Chords

Hi Friends,

I have a question about Diminished 7th Chords in piano theory.  In the 4 notes of the chord, each 2 consecutive notes form a minor 3rd.  When you move the bottom note to the top, each 2 consecutive notes of the chord again form a minor 3rd.  How can you tell if it is an inversion or not?

 

If there are many notes in a Diminished 7th chord,  is the lowest note the root of the chord?
