---------Well, I am no expert, as the naming business is rather complicated. For example, the Great Egrets are in the same family with the Great Blue/Gray Heron. When they are white, they are only slightly smaller in size. Help!  --- |
According to your ubiquitos Wikipedia: Cranes are large, long-legged and long-necked birds of the order Gruiformes, and family Gruidae. Unlike the similar-looking but unrelated herons, cranes fly with necks outstretched, not pulled back. There are representatives of this group on all the continents except Antarctica and South America. Most species of cranes are at least threatened, if not critically endangered, within their range. Several million birds, mainly Alaska snow birds (mostly white), spend their winter there or on their way to Mexico and back. When they fly up, the sky darkens. One needs special camera to capture the scene. Good for kids to fascinate in them birdies. --- |
The smaller ones are white, called great egrets. The bigger ones are either blue or gray great herons. They can be taller than 6 feet. I saw one by the ocean. It was taller than people, afraid of tourists coming with 4-5 feet, simply majestic. --- |
