Historically, the Plancius was a hydrographic research vessel in the service of the Dutch government. In 2007, the current owner purchased her from the Dutch Government, and since then she has undergone a total refit and refurbishment to prepare her for active service carrying passengers on polar expeditions. In the summer of 2009, the Plancius begins her new life as a modern-day expedition ship carrying passengers to Antarctica and the Arctic for polar adventure.
